OUR STORY

Built from the inside out.

Anchored Pathways to Higher Education is a Houston-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2025. Our mission is to support low-income, first-generation Texans as they navigate college, training, apprenticeships, and career pathways — with honest attention to immigration status and legal realities that most programs still aren't equipped to address.

Founder Michelle Gutiérrez didn't start with a strategic plan. She started with a family who needed help — and a willingness to sit with them, in their language, in the places they already trusted: churches, community centers, school parking lots. That relational, mobile approach became the blueprint for everything we're building.

We are early. We are lean. And we believe that's exactly the right way to build something that lasts.

THE PROBLEM

Three gaps. One family trying to cross all of them at once.

Guidance capacity is broken.

Seventeen percent of Texas school counselors report serving 600 or more students for college and career advising. At ratios of 450–600:1 — far above the recommended 250:1 — there is simply no time to sit with a family and walk through complex, high-stakes decisions.

Information overwhelms instead of helps.

FAFSA vs. TASFA. Scholarships vs. loans. Community college vs. university vs. apprenticeship — mostly in English, with no one to translate what it actually means for your family. Too much, too complex, or contradictory information doesn't just confuse people — it causes them to disengage entirely.

New policy is creating invisible barriers.

As of May 1, 2026, Texas requires proof of legal immigration status to obtain many professional licenses through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Undocumented and some noncitizen students can complete months or years of training — only to discover they cannot legally practice their trade. Most schools and programs have not yet updated their guidance to warn families.

OUR APPROACH

Four commitments we don't compromise on.

Bilingual & Family-Centered

Spanish-first when that's what's needed. Parents and guardians are co-decision-makers — not observers. We speak to the whole family, not just the student.

Status-Aware

We explicitly consider immigration status and licensing rules when mapping options. We do not send families into paths that will close on them later. This is one of the clearest gaps in existing services — and one of our most important contributions.

Relational & Mobile

We meet families where trust already exists — in their faith communities, their neighborhoods, their parking lots. And we stay with them through multiple decisions, not just the paperwork.

Evidence-Aligned

Our design draws on research showing that multi-contact, sustained support produces the largest gains in access and completion. We're not guessing at what works.

Faith-Rooted

We believe every person is created with purpose, worth, and dignity. Our work is grounded in respect — honoring families as whole people, not cases to be managed.

Equity-Driven

We recognize that education and career systems are not neutral. Our work focuses on making those systems understandable and accessible — especially for families who have been historically excluded.

Family-Centered

Every family has its own story, values, and priorities. We don't impose a path — we walk alongside families as they choose their own.

Relational

We don't do one-time transactions. We build trust over time, show up consistently, and stay with families through the decisions that matter most.

Michelle Gutiérrez, MS

Fundador y Director Ejecutivo

Michelle es una líder en educación superior con casi 15 años de experiencia en asesoría académica, éxito estudiantil y alianzas comunitarias. Ha liderado equipos de asesoría profesional, diseñado iniciativas para el éxito estudiantil y colaborado con organizaciones comunitarias.

Como primera de su familia en graduarse de la universidad, Michelle fundó Anchored Pathways para ampliar el acceso a orientación clara, apoyo bilingüe y recursos confiables para las familias que buscan acceder a la educación superior. Le apasiona crear modelos de servicio que hagan que la universidad sea más equitativa y accesible para todos.

Carlos López, CISA

Miembro de la Junta Directiva

Carlos se desempeña como Líder de Aseguramiento de Negocios para Controles de TI y ERM en Motiva Enterprises LLC, con más de una década de experiencia en auditoría, controles de TI y gestión de riesgos. Graduado de la Universidad de Houston y Auditor Certificado de Sistemas de Información (CISA), también ha trabajado con empresas como Marathon Oil, Schlumberger y AIG.

Como profesional de primera generación, Carlos está comprometido a fortalecer la gobernanza de Anchored Pathways y ayudar a ampliar el acceso a la educación superior para familias de escasos recursos.

Melissa Meléndez, LMSW

Miembro de la Junta Directiva

Melissa es Decana Adjunta de Estudiantes en la Universidad de Houston, donde promueve el bienestar y el éxito académico de los estudiantes. Como Trabajadora Social Maestra, está profundamente interesada en cómo las políticas influyen en las comunidades y ha colaborado con organizaciones como el Banco de Alimentos de Houston, United Way y SEWA International.

Melissa aporta a la junta una combinación única de trabajo social, asuntos estudiantiles y experiencia en recursos comunitarios, junto con una pasión personal por crear sistemas de atención que ayuden a los estudiantes a prosperar.
